Britainisnotanexceptioninhavingrelativelyfewmalenurses.ButwithagrowingshortageofnursesacrosstheNationalHealthService(NHS),attractingmenisbecomingmoreurgent.In2017,forthefirsttimeinadecade,morenurseslefttheprofessionthanjoined.Applicationstonursingprogrammesaredownbyathirdsince2016.AndtheshadowofBrexitmakesittougherfortheNHStofillits40,000-oddnursevacanciesfromabroad.DoubtsaboutwhethertheywillbeabletostaydissuadenursesfromEUcountries.

LastmonththeNHSlauncheditsbiggest-evernurserecruitmentcampaign.TVadvertisementsshowtheminactioninhospitalwardsandambulances,andonhomevisits.Somearemale—animprovementfrompreviouscampaigns,butnotenoughtodrawmenin,reckonsMrFerran.PaulVaughanfromNHSEngland,wholeadsaninitiativetochangeperceptionsofnursingandmidwifery,thinksrecruitmentshouldavoidplayingtogenderstereotypes.Hetakesadimviewofsloganslike“Areyoumanenoughtobeanurse?”,usedinanAmericancampaign.

Viewsofnursingasa“woman’sjob”havedeeproots.FlorenceNightingale,whoestablishedtheprinciplesofmodernnursinginthe1860s,insistedthatmen’sroughhandswere“notfittedtotouch,batheanddresswoundedlimbs”.TheRCNdidnotevenadmitmenasmembersuntil1960.Outdatedtitlessuchas“sister”and“matron”(usedformenaswell)donothelp.MrFerransayssomepatientsaresurprisedwhenheshowsup,becausetheythoughtonlywomencouldbenurses.
