写信者是来自中国四川省绵阳市的郑洪勋，他并非正值青春的学子，彼时已有84岁高龄，这位普通老人已到杖朝之年，但仍热情洋溢地在信中写到要努力把拉脱维亚语学好，这是他多年来的心愿。

郑洪勋23岁时受小说《走向新岸》影响，希望学习拉脱维亚语，但苦于国内没有合适教材，直到60年后买到贝德高出版的《汉语拉脱维亚语大词典》才一解困境，因而万分激动地写了这封跨洋信。四年后，在拉脱维亚大学孔子学院老师及志愿者的帮助下，双方才正式搭上线，一了郑洪勋的心愿，圆了这段跨国情谊。

1957年，23岁的四川人郑洪勋，在当年的高考语文作文中写下自己的理想：我已初学英语、俄语、德语和法语，还要学习另外四种语言，争取成为精通八国外语的语言学家。

“我14岁时就想学语言，1951年就在城里面买了一本俄华字典学习，后来还跟苏联人通过几年信。”郑洪勋讲述道，“但是因为自己条件不够，没法考进学校学习，我就自己学，像俄语就是我自学苦钻，一把鼻涕一把泪哭出来的。”

工作后，郑洪勋睡在集体宿舍，十五六个人睡一屋，床挨着床。晚上看书时担心“影响别人，别人会不安逸”，郑洪勋就把空墨水瓶洗干净，装点煤油安上灯芯，拎着这点灯光，跑到外面露天田坝坡上的田埂坐着，一个人学习外语。“我学语言开心得很，这是我的梦想。”郑洪勋提到，“我现在希望到100岁那年，我能掌握14种外语。”

“我早就开始自学波罗的海沿岸三国（爱沙尼亚、拉脱维亚、立陶宛）的语文，就是无法买到教科书。”郑洪勋说道，“我时常打听有无这些书或词典，还给商务印书馆、北京外文书店等写过订书单。”直到2018年9月，他终于在商务印书馆买到《汉语拉脱维亚语大词典》，把它作为学习拉脱维亚语的第一本教材。

在少年郑洪勋萌发学习外语的念头时，同一时间段，11岁的拉脱维亚人贝德高对中国产生了浓厚的兴趣。那是1949年，贝德高的父亲拿着一份报纸对他说：“从今天开始，这个世界诞生了一个叫中华人民共和国的新国家。”中学时，贝德高便常去里加第九图书馆看书，他对印有汉字的杂志情有独钟，下定决心要掌握这门语言。

1964年，贝德高进入莫斯科大学东方语言学院学习中文，他对这段求学经历十分怀念且自豪，他当时的老师有参加过中苏领导人会谈的高级翻译，也有翻译过《西游记》《水浒传》等名著的资深汉学家，也是受来自中国北方的口语老师的影响，如今的贝德高一口流利的普通话还掺杂着一点儿京味、东北味。

2023年4月，在唐静的拜托下，她的妈妈及叔叔在绵阳一小区终于见到了郑洪勋。唐静立马拨通视频电话，向他传递了当年的信已被贝德高教授收到的好消息。郑洪勋激动不已：“我给波罗的海好多孔子学院和教学机构都写过信，我想学习波罗的海沿岸三国的语言，但都没有得到回复，我真的没想到你们能来找我，十分感谢你们，我的心里现在终于有了着落。”
