In1957,ZhengHongxun,a23-year-oldfromSichuan,wrotedownhisdreamintheChinesecompositionofthatyear'scollegeentranceexamination:IhavejuststartedlearningEnglish,Russian,German,andFrench,andIalsowanttolearnfourotherlanguages,strivingtobecomealInguistproficientineightforeignlanguages.

"WhenIwas14yearsold,Iwantedtolearnlanguagesalready.In1951,IboughtaRussian-Chinesedictionaryinthecityandstartedstudying.Later,IwroteletterstosomeSovietpeopleforseveralyears.However,duetomylimitations,Icouldn'tattendschool,soItaughtmyself.Russian,forexample,wasalanguageIstudiedandlearnedwithdifficulties,"Zhengsaid.

"IhavelongstartedtostudythelanguagesofthethreeBalticcountries(Estonia,Latvia,andLithuania)bymyself,butIcouldn'tfindanyrelevanttextbooks."Zhengsaid,"IoftenaskiftherearethesebooksordictionariessoldinChina,andIhavealsowrittenbookordersfortheCommercialPress,ForeignLanguagesBookstoreinBeijing,etc."InSeptember2018,hefinallyboughttheChineseLatvianDictionarypublishedbytheCommercialPressanduseditasthefirsttextbookforlearningLatvian.

Atthesametime,wHentheyoungZhengHongxunhadtheideaoflearningaforeignlanguage,the11-year-oldPildegovi?salsodevelopedastronginterestinChina.Itwasin1949whenPildegovi?s'fathershowedhimanewspaperandsaid,"Fromtodayon,thereisanewcountrycalledthePeople'sRepublicofChinainThisworld."Duringhighschool,Pildegovi?softenwenttotheRigaNinthLibrarytoreadbooks.HewasparticularlyfondofmagazinesprintedwithChinesecharactersandmadeuphismindtomasterthislanguage.

In1964,Pildegovi?senteredtheSchoolofOrientalLanguagesatLomonosovMoscowStateUniversitytostudyChinese.Heisfondandproudofthisstudyexperience.HisteachersatthetimeincludedseniortranslatorswhohadparticipatedinmeetingsbetweenChineseandSovietleaders,aswellasexperiencedsinologistswhohadtranslatedfamousworkssuchas"JourneytotheWest"and"WaterMargIn".HewasalsoinfluencedbyaMandarinteacherfromnorthernChina.Today,Pildegovi?sspeaksfluentMandarinwithahintofBeijIngandNortheasternaccents.

Aftergraduatingin1970,Pildegovi?staughtintheFarEastoftheSovietUnion,andin1979,hereturnedtohishometownandbecamethefirstChineseteacHerinLatvianuniversities.Afteryearsofhardworkonthepodium,Pildegovi?sgraduallyrealizedacommondifficulty:tHerewasnospecializedChinese-Latviandictionary,andlocalstudentscouldonlyrelyontoolssuchasChinese-EnglishandChinese-Russiandictionariesforlearning,whichwasnotconducivetomasteringChineseforlocalstudents.

In2002,Pildegovi?sstartedformallytocompiletheChinese-Latviandictionary."Atthattime,IwasstillworkingasaneditorintheRussiandepartmentofXInhuaNewsAgency,whichrequiredmetoreadRussianarticleseverydaytofinderrorsorareasthatneededimprovementorsupplementation.Sometimes,Ihadtoread30articlesinaday."AccordingtoPildegovi?s'recollection,duringthebusygapsinhiswork,HemanagedtosqueezeoutatleastonehoureverydaytocompiletheChinese-Latviandictionary.HecontinuedtodosoevenafterhestartedteachingattheUniversityofLatviain2004,andhepersistedforeightyears.

In2010,Pildegovi?sfinallycompiledtheChinese-LatvianDictionary,athickonewithoverathousandpages,includingmorethan50,000Chineseentries.ThisfinallysolvedtheproblemofbidirectionaltranslationbetweenChineseandLatvian,andasaresult,hewasawardedthehigheststatehonor,theOrderoftheThreeStars,bytheLatviangovernment.

Afriendshipacrossathousandmiles

In2011,SouthChinaNormalUniversitycollaboratedwiththeUniversityofLatviatoestablishthefirstConfuciusInstituteinLatvia.ProfessorPildegovi?stookontheimportanttaskofbuildingtheInstituteandservedastheLatviandean.Therefore,ZhengHongxun'sletterwasalsosenttoThisConfuciusInstitute.

WhenShangQuanyu,professoroftheSchoolofForeignStudiesatSouthChinaNormalUniversityandtheChinesedeanoftheConfuciusInstituteattheUniversityofLatvia,receivedZheng'sletterinthemailroom,itwasalreadytheendof2018.Aftermorethanamonthoftravel,"theenvelopewascoveredwithmanypostagestamps.Itwasnoteasytosenditover.Itwasheavyinmyhands.Fiveorsixpagesoftheletterwereallwrittenwithabrush,showingthesender'ssincerity,"saidProfessorShang.

InThisletter,ZhengexpresseshissinceregratitudetoProfessorPildegovi?sandhumblyreferstohimselfasan"oldChinesestudent".HesincerelyhopesthatProfessorPildegovi?scanhelphimlearnLatvian.TheletteralsomentionshisjoyinestablishingConfuciusInstitutesinmanycountries,believingthatitcontributestothedevelopmentoffriendshipbetweenthesenationsandChIna.Theletterisfilledwiththegenuinepursuitofknowledge,respectforcultureandlongingforcivilizationandpeacefromanelderlygentlemanwhoiswillingtolearn.

Afterreadingthisletter,ProfessorPildegovi?swasdeeplymoved,notonlybyZheng'spraiseofhisculturalachievements,butalsobyhavingsuchaconfidantwhohassuchaprofoundinterestanddeterminationtolearnaboutthecultureandlanguageofLatvia,adistantcountry.

InordertohelpProfessorPildegovi?sfindZheng,overtheyears,ProfessorShanghasmobilizedteachersandvolunteersfromConfuciusInstitutestocontinuouslysearchforZheng.However,duetolongdistancesandtheCOVID-19pandemic,theseeffortsfailed.Itwasn'tuntil2022wHenTangJing,aChinesevolunteerteacherinLatvia,tookoverthismission.ShealsocomesFromMianyangCity,SichuanProvince.AfterlearnIngaboutthisstory,shemadeuphermindtohelpProfessorPildegovi?sfIndthisenthusiasticChineseconfidant.

InApril2023,attherequestofTangJing,hermotherandunclefinallymetZhengHongxunInaresidentialareainMianyang.TangimmediatelymadeavideocallanddeliveredthegoodnewsthattheletterhadbeenreceivedbyProfessorPildegovi?s.Zhengwasexcitedandsaid,"IhavewrittenletterstomanyConfuciusInstitutesandeducationalinstitutionsIntheBalticcountries,hopingtolearntheirlanguages.However,Ineverreceivedareply.Ineverexpectedthatyouwouldcometofindme.Thankyouverymuch.Ifinallyfeelrelieved."

Tangalsofeltrelievedinherheart:"IwasalittleworriedbeforefIndinghim.Afterall,heisover80yearsold.Iwasafraidthataccidentsmighthavehappenedduringtheyearsbeforewefoundhim.Fortunately,wefinallyfoundZhenganddidn'tletthetwoelderlypeople'swishesbeinvain."

Duetotheadvancedageofthetwoelderlypeople,communicationbetweenthemisInconvenient,buttheyneverforgettheirfriendship.InJuly2023,beforeTangJingwentonvacationbacktoChina,ProfessorPildegovi?sintentionallysignedhisnewlycompiled"SelectedLatvian-ChineseandChinese-LatvianDictionary"and"SelectedTranslationsofTangPoetry"onthetitlepage,askingTangJingtobringthemtoZhengandconveyhisrespectandgratitude.

OnSeptember22nd,2023,TangJingbroughtbackZheng'sgiftforProfessorPildegovi?s.ZhengandProfessorPildegovi?shadnotdiscussedthegiftsbefore,butcoincidentally,Zhengalsochoseabook,"AppreciationoftheCompleteTangPoetry",forProfessorPildegovi?sbesidestwohand-knittedcrochetpillowcases.Perhaps,duetothemysteriousfate,thiscross-borderfriendshipembodiesthelInefromTangpoetry:"Thoughmilesapart,wearecloseatheart".

“请教我学习拉脱维亚语!”2018年年底,拉脱维亚大学孔子学院的贝德高教授收到一封特殊的跨洋来信,信的开头,便是如此恳切的请求。

写信者是来自中国四川省绵阳市的郑洪勋,他并非正值青春的学子,彼时已有84岁高龄,这位普通老人已到杖朝之年,但仍热情洋溢地在信中写到要努力把拉脱维亚语学好,这是他多年来的心愿。

郑洪勋23岁时受小说《走向新岸》影响,希望学习拉脱维亚语,但苦于国内没有合适教材,直到60年后买到贝德高出版的《汉语拉脱维亚语大词典》才一解困境,因而万分激动地写了这封跨洋信。四年后,在拉脱维亚大学孔子学院老师及志愿者的帮助下,双方才正式搭上线,一了郑洪勋的心愿,圆了这段跨国情谊。

1957年,23岁的四川人郑洪勋,在当年的高考语文作文中写下自己的理想:我已初学英语、俄语、德语和法语,还要学习另外四种语言,争取成为精通八国外语的语言学家。

“我14岁时就想学语言,1951年就在城里面买了一本俄华字典学习,后来还跟苏联人通过几年信。”郑洪勋讲述道,“但是因为自己条件不够,没法考进学校学习,我就自己学,像俄语就是我自学苦钻,一把鼻涕一把泪哭出来的。”

工作后,郑洪勋睡在集体宿舍,十五六个人睡一屋,床挨着床。晚上看书时担心“影响别人,别人会不安逸”,郑洪勋就把空墨水瓶洗干净,装点煤油安上灯芯,拎着这点灯光,跑到外面露天田坝坡上的田埂坐着,一个人学习外语。“我学语言开心得很,这是我的梦想。”郑洪勋提到,“我现在希望到100岁那年,我能掌握14种外语。”

这些年,在郑洪勋的努力下,他不断尝试掌握英语、俄语、阿拉伯语、德语、法语、西班牙语、意大利语、希腊语等语种,甚至于“东南亚语言里的越南、柬埔寨、老挝、泰国等国家语言,我都接触并学习”。采访过程中,郑洪勋时而说几句他国语言,证明自己努力不虚。

但多年来,郑洪勋一直有个遗憾。也是在1957年,这一年的四月份,郑洪勋买到一本中译本苏联小说《走向新岸》,小说描写了一个拉脱维亚家庭的故事,这引起他的浓厚兴趣,萌发了学习拉脱维亚语的念头。

要学习外语得先有教材,拉脱维亚语在国内仍是小语种范畴,在之后长达61年的时间里,郑洪勋一直苦于找寻不到合适的汉拉词典。

“我早就开始自学波罗的海沿岸三国(爱沙尼亚、拉脱维亚、立陶宛)的语文,就是无法买到教科书。”郑洪勋说道,“我时常打听有无这些书或词典,还给商务印书馆、北京外文书店等写过订书单。”直到2018年9月,他终于在商务印书馆买到《汉语拉脱维亚语大词典》,把它作为学习拉脱维亚语的第一本教材。

在阅读了该词典的后记后,郑洪勋得知编写该词典的贝德高教授不仅是著名的汉学家,同时也是拉脱维亚大学孔子学院的拉方院长,他十分激动,于2018年11月19日写了一封信,还用拉语认真抄写了词典的后记,随信寄往千里之外的拉脱维亚大学。

信的第一句,便是“请教我学习拉脱维亚语”!

在少年郑洪勋萌发学习外语的念头时,同一时间段,11岁的拉脱维亚人贝德高对中国产生了浓厚的兴趣。那是1949年,贝德高的父亲拿着一份报纸对他说:“从今天开始,这个世界诞生了一个叫中华人民共和国的新国家。”中学时,贝德高便常去里加第九图书馆看书,他对印有汉字的杂志情有独钟,下定决心要掌握这门语言。

1964年,贝德高进入莫斯科大学东方语言学院学习中文,他对这段求学经历十分怀念且自豪,他当时的老师有参加过中苏领导人会谈的高级翻译,也有翻译过《西游记》《水浒传》等名著的资深汉学家,也是受来自中国北方的口语老师的影响,如今的贝德高一口流利的普通话还掺杂着一点儿京味、东北味。

1970年毕业后,贝德高在苏联远东任教,1979年又回到家乡,成为拉脱维亚高校中首位汉语教师。在讲台上耕耘多年,贝德高逐渐意识到一个普遍困难:没有专门的汉拉词典,当地学生只能借助汉英、汉俄等其他语言的工具书进行学习,不利于汉语的掌握。

2002年,贝德高开始正式编写汉拉词典。“我当时还在新华社俄语编辑部当编辑,每天看俄语文章有什么错误或者需要改善补充的地方,有时一天要看30篇文章。”据贝德高回忆,在繁忙工作的空档,他每天硬是挤出至少一个小时编写汉拉词典,2004年到拉脱维亚大学任教后依旧如此,就这样坚持了8年时间。

2010年,贝德高最终编纂完成了《汉语拉脱维亚语大词典》,一千多页的厚厚词典,共收录5万余条汉语词条,终于解决了汉语和拉脱维亚语之间双向互译的难题,他因此被拉脱维亚政府授予最高奖三星勋章。

“出版后,中国驻拉脱维亚大使评价说,贝德高属于拉脱维亚,也属于中国。我认同这种说法,这是我对中拉两国文化交流的一点儿贡献。”贝德高说道。但他没想到,这本词典不仅便利了两国学生学习,在八年后,还影响到一位普通的中国老人,一了其60余年的心愿。

2011年,华南师范大学与拉脱维亚大学合作,创办拉脱维亚第一所孔子学院,贝德高担起筹建重任,出任拉方院长,因此郑洪勋的信也就寄往该孔子学院。

华南师范大学外国语言文化学院教授、拉脱维亚大学孔子学院中方院长尚劝余在收发室拿到郑洪勋这封信时,已是2018年年底,经过了月余的跨国漂流。“信封上贴了满满的邮票,能够寄过来很不容易,拿在手里沉甸甸的,五六页的信都是用毛笔写的,可见用心。”尚劝余说道。

在这封信里,郑洪勋对贝德高表达了真挚的感谢,自谦为“中国老学生”,真心希望贝教授能够帮助他学习拉脱维亚语,信中还提到他为许多国家开设孔子学院这件事感到高兴,认为这样有助于两国友谊发展。信中洋溢着一位真心求学的老先生对知识的追求、对文化的尊重以及对文明的憧憬对和平的向往。

贝德高在看完这封信后十分感动,不仅感动于郑先生对自己的文化成果的肯定,也感动于有这样一位知己,同样对遥远国度的文化和语言有如此深厚的兴趣和学习的韧劲。

为了帮助贝德高找到这位相隔千里的知己,这些年来,尚劝余发动孔子学院的老师和志愿者们不断找寻,但都由于路途遥远、疫情阻隔等原因作罢,直到2022年,拉脱维亚汉语教师志愿者唐静接过这一棒,她同样来自四川省绵阳市,得知这件事后,下定决心要帮贝德高教授找到这位好学的中国知音。

2023年4月,在唐静的拜托下,她的妈妈及叔叔在绵阳一小区终于见到了郑洪勋。唐静立马拨通视频电话,向他传递了当年的信已被贝德高教授收到的好消息。郑洪勋激动不已:“我给波罗的海好多孔子学院和教学机构都写过信,我想学习波罗的海沿岸三国的语言,但都没有得到回复,我真的没想到你们能来找我,十分感谢你们,我的心里现在终于有了着落。”

唐静也感到心里有了着落:“找之前还是有点害怕的,毕竟老人家那么大岁数,就怕没找到的那几年有什么变故,还好最终找到了,没让两位老人的心愿落空。”

由于两位老人家年事已高,相互沟通多有不便,但仍然不忘两人情谊。2023年7月,唐静休假回国前,贝德高特意在其新编的《精选拉脱维亚语汉语-汉语拉脱维亚语词典》和《唐诗选译》扉页上签名,叮嘱唐静一定要带给郑洪勋,转达他的敬意和谢意。

2023年9月22日,唐静为贝德高带回了郑洪勋的回礼。事先全无商量过,但巧合的是,郑洪勋准备的回礼除了两个他亲手钩织的钩花枕套外,还有一本《全唐诗赏析》。如此缘分,或许冥冥之中,这段跨国情谊正应了唐诗里的那一句:海内存知己,天涯若比邻。
